I'm confused studying an example from my text book:

Light fixture at the end of a switch and light circuit

The (hot) black wire enters switch box and connects to the switch.
The neutral (white) wire enters the switch box bypasses switch in
route to light fixture.
The neutral wire spliced in the switch box, then uses a wire nut to reconnect it?
It seems easier to route the neutral through the switch box directly to the light fixture
without the splice and wire nut?

The question is likely referring to two cables entering the box. If you had a raceway system then you could pull the neutral straight through without a splice.

Even if you have a raceway it's still nice to have the spliced neutral there in case you need it later on.

As Infinity pointed out, you could do that easily if you were using pipe. With NM, its easier to just get your 2 cable ends, terminate the hots and tie the neutral together- takes what 15 secs?.

Otherwise to eliminate the noodle splice you would have to loop the nm thru the box and remove the sheath. There was ?? a guy on some other forum that said he did something similar to that for kicks- I don't have a link though.
