Commercial job coming up in Austin Texas. Does anyone from that area know if each fixture including cans, exit lights etc require 2 support wires fastened to the structure? I understand doing it for a troffer but not sure on other luminairs. I tried calling the city about this but after an hour on hold gave up. Does anyone know if Austin requires a specific color to ID the support wire?

Thanks

I believe this should answer your question

In addition to that section. The Building code requires that in high seismic regions that luminaries have a minimum of 2 seismic support wires connected to opposite corners of the luminaire. I'm not sure about the seismic zones in Texas

Austin is not in a high seismic zone.

This is the reason I was asking about recessed cans, exit lights etc. This is from Austin's website. Hoping someone has experience in this area.

Thanks

I find it interesting that the local code section refers to luminaries (plural of luminary: a person of respect or influence in their field or an artificial light) rather than luminaires (plural of luminaire: a technical term for a complete lighting fixture) as used in the NEC.

Other than seismic considerations I see little justification for the local amendment.

"Cattycorner" stood out to me also.

We have similar rules here. I'm the smartA that does exactly like it says. There is typically a hole in the frame near the trim can/ring. Many times they are on the verticle part that holds the "arms" that set on the grid. I'd sugest grab some bright green or orange paint and paint the wires before install. Caddy makes great bang on clips for or even with grid wire for use with red iron.

Then

If need be fold the tip of the arms that over hangs the grid and drive a sharp point wafer head screw right in caddycornered as well. In aciustic ceilings and adjust if its metal/wood framed. and i would also confirm with the fire inspector, since yer in texas and i'm not. Lol

Thats how'd i'd do that. Pass 1st time everytime.

Well, I guess I will throw out "gage" also.:)

I noticed "gage" also. Really not surpised since its Austin. I tried calling the inspector again today, set on hold, left a voicemail etc. Still no confirmation. If I find out I will post the findings incase anyone else needs to know.

Austin is known for a RED A phase. They also require the circuit color to be continious throughout the branch circuit. Circuit #6 has to be a blue hot, switch leg etc even when using MC cable. It will take some concentration to make black circuits red and red circuits black.

I attached more of Austins code below.

That's completely stupid. Are you allowed to use a piece of tape for MC? How strictly do the inspectors enforce this?

Austin

I worked in Austin for many years but have been in Dallas for the last 5. When I worked in Austin I would attach one wire to 4/0 boxes using the hole on the Caddy box support. 2 wires on all 2 x 2 and 2x4 and recessed cans. We always painted our wires yellow to identify them as ours. Also, remember that the color code is different;

120/208
Red
Black
Blue

277/480
Brown
Yellow
Purple

I suggest asking for the Criteria book from the One Stop Shop. Good luck!

As far as I know you have to use the correct phase hot color throughout the MC run, red circuit to a switch, 2 MC cables to each switch box, you have to carry the nuetral down and back up. RED/WHT/GRN MC cable. Dumb but thats austin. I had to look around to find a supply house that has a decent stock too.
