I have a project that requires me to install two parking lot light fixtures next to a propane tank. any electrical installed within 15ft is a hazard class area, I will install EYS at the pole for the light pole wiring, so my question is horizontally, how high is the classified area is it 15ft? is it 15ft horizontally as well? so if I install a 20ft pole with the fixture mounted outside the 15ft area would the fixture head need to be rated?

Thanks for your comments.

Propane is heavier than air, so given an open air situation the hazardous area should not extend much higher than any dike or other containment. But that is not necessarily reflected in the classification.

More details are necessary. Especially what is there to make a classified area? A tank alone doesn't necessarily mean we have a classified area. Permanently installed piping and valves that are not open in any way to free air doesn't necessarily require any associated hazardous location. Open connections to the tank either for filling or removing gas from the tank will likely mean there is a classified area. There is likely classified area near any relief vents also.

This is a filling station, were they fill busses on an hourly bases. Yes it is a classified area, 5ft. from connections is rated Class 1 Div.1 and within 15ft. is class 1 Div. 2.

So, My questions remains, Does the fixture above the classified area require to be explosion prof?
I'm unclear and thus am asking for help from the Pro's.

The busses that run on propane which carry you too and from Disneyland are smiling at you for your help.
Thanks.

Now that you mention that, I was at Disney last winter, I don't care how much they promote themselves or what others say, I could care less if I ever go there again (Disney). I also went to Rose Bowl while there and it was much more worth the money to me. But since they are smiling at me I will be nice.:)

I don't know what to tell you about the classification of the area where the light is. As has been said propane is a heavy gas and will linger around on the ground so it has a good chance of not being classified. Pits and other depressions are going to have even more concentration of gas in most cases.
