Is there a recommended spacing or some type of guidance when designing a layout of light poles for a given area whether it be a sidewalk, or a parking lot, etc? I know the wattage and height of pole will play a role, but is there some kind of program or rule of thumb to go by?

The manufacturer of the light fixture itself will have photometric information on the various lights they make.

So spacing, as well as the heighth, depends on the light itself, as well as what light level is needed and/or required for the area.

go to lithonia lighting's website; they have a program you can download for this. if you can get a copy of the .cad drawings for the area you can even load them right in and work.

Take advantage of free labor.

If you're dealing with parking lot lights, the area rep for whatever brand you're likely use will do this work for you. This is what I do almost 100% of the time. I had one recently where 15 degree tilted arms on the shoeboxes made for better light distribution because of where the bases had to be, and this is something I'd have overlooked. Also, the one fixture had a cutoff shade piece on two sides to keep light out of the neighbor's windows.

I agree with MD.
But there are standards published by the IES. The layout considers lumens and uniformity and location. Pole height and lumen source are important factors.
