If the cable enters into the fixture housing with a propper bushing or connector, you are fine.

I would also like to add that the fixture should be listed for that purpose. If we are talking "regular" fluoroescent lighting i.e., trough or 1x2/4 then it should be fine. If this is a decorative fixture taking circlines or the plug style fluoros then you might have a problem.

It all depends on the individual fixture, it's listing, and/or instructions that accompany it.

Wigi- I was jsut bringing up the possibilies. As Roger and I pointed out, it is important to refer to the manufacturer's instructions and the NEC for install. Sorry if I scared you. :)

I want to know when was the last time anyone actually looked at the instructions that came with a fixture? Most of the el-cheapos that some of my customers buy don't even have them. Yet I installed a cieling fan just last week that took an hour and a half and was on the spendy side that did not have instructions. Monte cristo I believe was the name brand. Had antlers and all kinds of things attached. I would have loved instructions on that one.

I try to look at them when I pull it out of the box. I agree that not all of them have instructions or if they do they are legible or even in english  But because there is more then one way to hang a light, I just like to give it a good once over, that way I am at least familier with how it is supposed to hang.

edit to include: I have hung some fans that have a book of instructions and they are simple to hang. Usually, at least in my experiance, the more the fan costs the less in the way of instructions it has.
