I have a 3 story, 60k sq ft, steel framed, metal roof, new construction building. Based on this type of construction, do I have to provide lightening protection for this building?

If so, Where do I begin?

Regards

Re: lightening protection

Lightning protection is not a requiremnent of the NEC. It is up to te building owner as to whether lightning protection should be installed.

Re: lightening protection

NFPA 780 gives criteria to help a building owner decide whether they want to have it installed. NFPA 780 is a standard and not a code requirement.

Re: lightening protection

The lightning protection system would be based on the design of the roof structure. This would indicate how many air terminals would be needed and the location and spacing of those terminals.

You would next determine how many and where down conductors are to be installed and run to ground terminals.

The details are many...
