Lighting clearance requirements

The only real clearances that are given in the NEC are for clothes closets. Take a look at 410.8.

You might also want to look at 410.5 and 410.6 as well but these sections don't have specified clearances.

By the way welcome to the forum.:)

Here, we kind of consider a closet a closet and include pantries in there as well, though we don't really have anything to hang our hat on.

The problem with that is that the 2008 NEC now has a definition of clothes closet.

Here is the 2008 definition:

"Clothes Closet. A non-habitable room or space intended primarily for storage of garments and apparel."

So the 2008 NEC makes it harder to say that a pantry is a clothes closet.

See that's a great argument for why contractors should carry their code books with them. Pull that out and hit me with that and you get the pass.:D

Told you I didn't really have anything to hang my hat on.

If you can't hang up your hat John, it can't be a clothes closet, now can it? ;)

Except pantries, I try to keep to the clothes closet rules for all closets. Avoids any misunderstandings.

That was kind of my thinking too.
