I am trying to specify a lighting contactor for (5) flood light poles each housing (3) 400W flood lights on 240 single phase. I have decided to branch these out with (2) 2-pole 40A breakers through a 4-pole lighting contactor. Using 3 conductor #8 with ground. I still need to verify the contactor will accept a #8..

Circuit 1 - 3 poles: 18A/.8 = 22.5A
Circuit 2 - 2 poles: 12A/.8 = 15A

My questions are:

If I currently have a 4-pole 20A mechanically held contactor, do I have to replace this to a 40A?

Is each pole rated for 20 amps or is this for all 4 poles?

Would there be any other issues?

The model is a Sprecher CAL7-20-M40-120.

Thanks!

Contactors are rated in amps per pole. If it is rated 30A, each pole can handle 30A. Note: there may be control contacts (called A1, A2, for instance) that are for control circuits only may not have teh rating of the power contacts).
