lighting contactors

Hello. I would like to know when it is required to use a lighting contactor on HID lighting instead of a snap switch. My application is 4 400 watt MH per switch @ 240 volt useing a double pole double throw switch. I have ran into this type of application before and the company I worked for required a contactor. Thanks

There is no NEC requirement. There are many applications when a contactor is a vastly preferable way to control lighting, but it's not mandated by the NEC.
