I always tell a customer that recessed lights are like Lays potato chips, "You can never have just one." I do not know of any web sites, but for me if you use cans for anything more than walk areas and room perimeters you had better plan on a bunch of them. I think it is good lighting, but if it is used for general lighting the dark spots that result from not having enough really stand out.

There are plenty of manufacturer's manuals discussing lighting design and basic layouts for different task lighting applications. I always found it easier to contact one of my suppliers who have in-house salesmen trained by these manufacturers to do this work. You are paying for this service--why not use it?

I have been looking for the same thing mainly for florescents. Have been playing around with Cooper Photometric Toolbox and LitePro Estimator Tools. Both are free.
