Lighting fixture height requirement??

Hello everyone,

I have a customer that wants to install a low voltage track system on a low vaulted ceiling (fixture would be around 6 1/2 feet from the floor) I know there is a code for minimum ceiling height for ceiling fans (for obvious reasons) but is there a height restriction for lighting?

well onlt thing i could find on track lighting, art 410.151, 2008 nec code book says low voltage lighting operating at less than 30 volts is permitted to be installed less than 5 ft above the floor.

I always use 6'8" (door frame height) as rule of thumb but chandeliers over dining tables are commonly lower.

There's some exceptions in the building code, but the average height of a ceiling is 7' and light fixtures do not factor into that so they can be whatever you won't smack into.

And of course if it's commercial there are some ADA requirements.

this will be a building code issue unless it falls somewhere under art. 680. I thought it was 7' (except for fixtures over tables, etc. .).

Do they want low voltage or de-fused lighting ? You could get the carpenter to install a slat board continiously down the length and install dimable flourscents, mask the lamps, it will be warmer and brighter light if required...

I installed some of the track lighting that used the exposed cable for the current and the fixture clipped on the cable where ever you wanted them. The mfg. instructions stated in BOLD letters not to be installed below 7 foot.

This is a low voltage monorail we are installing and it will have some small bullet lights and 2 pendant lights hanging over a desk.
