One of the biggest PITA's is when a customer asks you to recommend or find lighting fixtures. This is both resi and commercial, inside and outdoors.

Sometimes they will see something they like in another house or building and ask me who makes it and where it's available and I haven't a clue! :( I just had a customer ask me to find "better" 4 tube 48" wraparounds than are normally available from the supply house. (He didn't like the quality of the plastic diffuser.)

I know that architects and lighting designers come up with this stuff all the time. Is there a directory or something like Sweets for lighting manufacturers? I know I can just hand the customer a Lightolier or Progress catalog but many times that is too limited.

Re: Lighting fixture resources

I use a local lighting designer and showroom to direct my customers on custom jobs. This makes the owners happy and they kick work back to me from other walk-ins.

I have also picked up a lot of good pictures and design specs for a wide range of custom to special order lighting right from the internet. :)

Yes, I do direct resi customers to lighting showrooms. What about commercial? I had a customer one time that liked the lighting that Applebys use on the exterior of their restaurants. You can Google till you are blue in the face! Gota be a directory somewhere.

Re: Lighting fixture resources

Hal as long as AppleBee's doesn't have a copyright on it and it's not a neon with over 1000 volts to it and they can afford it, Yes they can have anything they want, but settle up front for finders fee's.
I search the Internet for lighting fixtures all the time. that is how I found 4' T10 fluorescent lamps that have a 3600 lumen's output, that run right off the RS slandered ballast. and Lexan (GE) difuser's for wrap around fixtures that will take a beating of kids throwing rocks at them.
But to find stuff, I have one little weapon, It's called Web Ferret it uses all the search engines at one time allowing for more returns on your search.

Re: Lighting fixture resources

Hal,

In Commercial Applications I Generally Call The Local Lighting Manufacturers Rep. They Will Generally Rep. Many Different Manufacturers And They Have Very Good Ideas About What Type, Quality, And Price Of Fixtures Would Be Acceptable In Each Situation.
