Lighting Fixtures on

Hi, I have an issue with the an electrical contractor. He is saying that the code allows to install recessed fixtures on a gypsum ceiling without a housing. This fixtures have no housing, meaning that the connection cables are exposed above the ceiling. Also, they are using SJT cable from the register box to the fixtures, and the connection is not made inside any enclosure, they are just using Scotch Tape. I need help determining which code articles are being violated using this fixtures and the SJT cable. For starters I know SJT is not permitted above ceilings. Any other articles I should consider?

Why not call the electrical inspector to take a peek at what you have?
Is the job filed? Are there not inspections being performed?

are the fixtures u/l approved for that installation. Ask to see a cut sheet for that fixture, make sure it is a match. Ask to see a copy of his license, insurance, etc., elec.permit.

1. As you may know, SJT is a product of ALLIED, and is designed as an appliance cord for cord and plug connected equipment, and is not permitted as a permanent wiring method in any concealed area, no matter what gauge or configuration.
2. Boxes, or other approved and accessible enclosures, are required at all splice points, always, no exceptions, in a building.
3. Wiring methods permitted and wiring allowed in a building are located in the code in sections 320 through 398. The description you've given follows none of these approved methods.
