I was asked by the restorer of a historic street clock what type of lighting to use for the side lights and clock dial. The clock dial is translucent.
The side lights take a standard A base lamp, currently they are traffic signal lamps, and have lasted 5 years, but it takes a bucket truck to change them.
I was considering LED for both. Are LED rope style lights available?

To answer your question about LED rope lights being available...Yes...Home Depot sells them fairly cheep..27' for $69. The supply house I use also sells them by the foot aprox. $4.50 a foot

Rope lighting while good has a short life

Jim, you think 11 years is a short lamp life?

LED Light Technology is now available in rope light. This ?" diameter 120-volt super-bright LED rope light will last for 100,000 hours, that?s 11+ years of continuous use!

Tom, with a translucent face, my first thought is with a circular fluorescent, if you can get one (or two) inside.

I don't think you will find a cold weather ballast for a circle line lamp or find the life is that long.

In my area pretty much all fluorescent or neon back lighted are being reto-fitted with LEDs.

One of regular customers has 9 large back lighted letters on each of their stores...in Neon it takes at least 3 - 20 amp circuits....retrofitted to LED and one 20 amp circuit can do it.

LED lamp life is color dependant. There are no white LED's that have 100k hours. 50k hours is the highest I've seen. Red and Amber colors are around 100k hours. Also, end of lamp life for LED's doesn't mean lamp failure but a 70% light output.
