Hello to everyone I have a question regarding the title above we are being required to install an exterior fixture switch operated on the exit door of a newly installed screen room which is attached to an existing residential dwelling. The screen room is attached to the rear of the house which has a sliding door that allows access to the screen room from the house. The screen room has two doors on each end of the room which are grade level and a standard screen type swing doors no glass no panels installed in any walls or doors it's strictly a screen room with a roof. You exit the house from the sliding door step down into the screen room which now put you grade level access. According to article 210.70 that has been referenced we are required to have an exterior light as per plan review. Article 210.70 (a) (1) this would not fall under habitable a room. Article 210.70(A)(2) falls under additional locations section (A)(2)(B) starts out as "for dwelling units, attached garages, detached garage with electric power at least one wall switch controlled lighting outlet shall be installed to provide illumination on the exterior side of outdoor entrances or exits with grade level access. A vehicle door in a garage shall not be considered as an outdoor entrance or exit."
My question is are we required according to this article to have an exterior light at the screen door locations? Am I looking at this wrong when section 210.70 (A)(2)(B) where it starts out "for dwelling units" is that just referencing attached and detached garages for dwelling units only?
also the existing sliding door has a light on its exterior.

looking to get some information and thoughts regarding this matter thank you in advance.

This is NOT what we have but If you have a freestanding patio in the middle of a yard with a screen room on top of this patio that is grade level access with two doors one on each end would you need a light on each exterior entrance/exit?

In my opinion, no, a free-standing structure like a gazebo need not have lighting, but it would be convenient to have.

For the attached new screened structure, I believe that you created new exterior doors, and they should have lighting.

The lights themselves need not be at the doors, but should illuminate the areas, like existing floods that can aim the right way.

I will add that I would insist on it if I were the customer.

thank you I agree they do not have to be on the room and only net to illuminate the area of the doorway. The other issue is the switch location adjacent to the doors the screen room frames are only 1" square stock. However if you are already at grade level that mean no steps to enter or exit the room and the spot light from the existing sliding door will shine through the screens to light up the area, again there is no solid panels just screen in which the light will pass.
