Lighting Safety Chain

Many project mounting details require the high bay and low bay HID light fixtures to be installed with a "Safety Chain", even when the light fixture is 3/4" conduit stem hung. I can not find in the NEC where the "Safety Chain" is required. Please advise.

Howard,
Check out 314.27(A)(B) The last sentence of 314.27(B) states:
"A luminaire that weighs more then 50lb shall be supported independently of the outlet box unless the outlet box is listed for the weight to be supported" The NEC requires independent support. Maybe OSHA gives examples of the types... Lets see what others with more experience say.....

It's not an NEC requirement but if it's part of the manufacturer's listing of the fixture than it must be used.
