Hey people I need some help and ideas. I have a customer that we are wiring a new home for that is requesting to put some can lights under their deck. This is something that I have not seen before or done. I am wondering what some of you have done to put can lights under a deck. i should not that they are planing on putting some plastic in the joists of the deck to catch water and run it out to the end of the deck. they are also planning on putting tong and grove boards on the underside. do they make a recessed can that is weather proof?? rated for a wet location? any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

Do they have a clearance problem that requires the lights to be recessed?
If not, it will be much easier to find a weather proof surface mount fixture than a recessed one.
AFAIK all can lights assume that the space into which they are recessed is a dry area. But you might find recessed fixtures designed for mounting in walls and steps as well as other types of landscape lighting.
I would definitely look for LED for this application since CFLs have problems starting in cold weather.

I don't see the tongue and groove as being water resistant, so they must be planning a water proof system above the ceiling. As a GC, I have done one. We built the covered patio with a shingled roof and then built the deck pretty much right on top the shingled roof. Our ceiling was also T&G, but I would not have done any other way then a way knowing that it was water tight.

Recessed lights don't come much more waterproof than a swimming pool light. But I still like GoldDigger's idea of surface mount better. Plenty of wet location choices there.

I have used them under a deck but the deck floor was designed with a weatherproof membrane so that water did not come thru. This was a deck on a second floor with a screen porch below it.
