Does anyone have a rule of thumb for spacing of recessed can lights? How far from walls, how far between rows, how many per sqaure ft for adequate lighting?

A lot of customers are asking me to design lighting, which I am not very good at. My opinion is put up a lot, then add a dimmer. Any ideas or suggestions, books, CD's etc. are welcome.
Thanks

Re: lighting

Hi Shocker,
I always make suggestions to the customer, but they usually have some pretty fixed ideas on what they want. I suggest lighting placement per the room, is it functional light (kitchen or work area) or is it more accent/mood lighting? For the functional rooms, yup, lots of lights and put in a dimmer. Be certain not to leave the corners dark. Accent/mood lights, the customer has gotta call it (size, style, placement..) Just be certain to use AT type for insulated ceilings..energy failure at inspection time w/out the AT type assemblies.
