What is the ruling on fluorescent lighting in a machine shop; strip lights, covered lights, height limitations, etc.? I can't locate any specifics in the code book.

Re: Lighting

Too bad we don't measure light in caddle (spelled candle) power. The correct term would be "footcandles". If someone puts 200 to 250 in a work space then the workers will go blind from the glare.

Cattle power. More beef per watt. :D

Here is a good ref.

Oh yeah, forgot about flicker!
If you have rotating machines, standard magnetic ballasts can sometimes make them look still if flickering at near the same frequency. HID also.

Solution: electronic ballasts (higher frequency flicker) or alternate phases of adjacent lights.

HID can be ordered with restrike quartz lamp for emergency lighting.

I guess you need more than light level after reading your post again. I think Osha or NFPA 101 is what you are looking for.

Sorry for the wind above...
