Lightning Damage

I have a house that recently took a lightning strike. The owner saw the ball come across the overhead grounded conductor. Initially the only damage was that all the wires in the water heater were damaged, the satelite and tv were also damaged. Is there a check list or procedure to follow to qualify if concealed wiring and other items are ok to energize. No breakers have tripped, and no visible damage to wires that are exposed. Thanks bg

nbk,
you will notice when lightning is mentioned a common word is used to discribeit's effects on electrical systems -- the word "unpredictable" is used!
lightning effects many different systems and in many different ways. you mentioned "no breakers have tripped" --- but do they function at all???? many appliances can be damaged "on the spot" while others may take a month to show their failure. i would suggest starting at the service and visually inspect and operate all devices. confirm the ground system is intact. also check all phone-data-tv systems and outlets. keep an eye out for "tracking" to trace lightning's path of distruction -- it can jump from point to point and leave a light tace of residue material like charcoal>???????????

Your best bet is to spot check at various outlets, perform an insulation test on all circuit conductors, and perhaps some infrared thermography. Otherwise, install a TVSS, have the home owner increase his insurance, and hope for the best.
