Lightning Protection for Healthcare Facilities

A question just came across my desk asking if lightning protection was required for a hospital. I know that NFPA 780 has a risk assessment calc you can go through to determine if it is recommended or not. I also checked the new 2006 AIA Healthcare Guidelines and couldn't find anything. It makes sense to have a lightning protection system, but I need to determine if it is an actual code requirement.

Does anyone else have any input on this?

Thanks,

Tom

I'm curious as to why you think it makes sense?

What area of the country are you talking about, and how tall are the other buildings next to it? The assessment is where you should start.

Check your local building codes.

For example, the Florida Building Code, Section 419.3.19 requires a LPS to be installed in compliance with the NFPA 780 for all new and additions to hospital buildings.

I feel it makes sense since it is an 8 story building in the northeast.

Insurance??

Insurance??

All the hospital projects I have seen have had this in some fasion I also believe you need to review the FM mutal and insurance requirements.
