Lightning protection for a floating roof tank. We are having a debate here about the devices used for lightning protection. Do they have to be UL listed to meet code. Is a CSA listed device OK for use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately most of the members here are experts in working to and beyond the requirements of the NEC.
Lightning protection devices and installation are the subject of other codes in the US and Canada, so you may not find a lot of accurate advice. I would recommend they you engage the services of a professional in that specific field.

Where is your project located?

What code do you want to comply with?

Is there a project specification you're trying to comply with? If so, what does that say?

This is a petrol tank, correct?

It's in the midwest, we are trying to comply with NFPA 780. We are in the discussion phase of the project. We have contacted several vendors and most have prodcuts that are CSA or CE compliant.. Hence the question of the UL listing. I see where UL has a whole section on lightning protection and that is what's sparking the debate..no pun intended.

You'll need to look in 780 and see what it says about listed & labeled, and if that requirement is there, to what standard your system and/ or components must be listed under.

UL does not reciprocate with CSA or CE.

CE is never acceptable if the rule requires a third party evaluation. CE is a self certification by the manufacturer without third party review.
