A manufactuting plant I am working with is planning a 13,000 square foot expansion. This new area will be a Class I, Division 1 area for mixing and storing liquids for flavoring and will call for explosion proof equipment. Question - Is facility lightning protection (lightning rods with grounding) called for on the expansion because of the Class and Division ratings? If so, will the original plant need it too - there is none now. Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: Lightning Protection

Lightning protection is not required by the NEC, but if its installed, the rules in the NEC and the NFPA standard on lightning protection are used.

Re: Lightning Protection

Someone needs to make the determination if the protection is needed, perhaps the insurance company. There is no guaranty that the protection will work, but there is more evidence that some level of protection is better than none at all.
