I am looking into why the code does not allow for a hanging fixture within 3' of a tub area (I have a hunch)Can anyone from a code making authority tell me. I am having a few problems with some designers as to the location and would like some feed back as to how far / close you have seen or installed hanging fixtures to tubs

rrrrrrrrrusty,
i'm not on a code panel but article 410.4(D) explains the area and type of fixture not allowed around and over a tub or shower enclosure and wouldn't you think it had something to do with an average heigth and reach of a person not to able to touch an energized fixture part while they were wet?????????????

I just want to make sure I understand 410.4d correctly is it measured 3ft out by 8 ft up from the top wall of the shower the reason I ask is my boss had me hang a fan in a bathroom the other day when I questioned him on this he said there was no code

Your boss is right. One other thing. We don't exist. Am I freakin' you out, man? ;)

If you are outside the 8' x 3' zone defined in 410.4(D), you're legal.

Not to hi-jack thread. But was wondering if other AHJ's interpret same. And even though I don't agree with ruling:

Seems that the State at which I reside, at the "highest levels" has their own interpretation of Article 410.4(d).As in applying to Wall-Hung decorative multi-bulb vanity lights above the mirror. In this fixture as discribed in the above, pertaining to bathroom counter mirror areas, extends within this denoted three-foot horizontal zone area by(+/-)8" (inches)or so,said requirement is waved/bent in allowance for the Manufactures, standard size fixture length.

Some of the Electrical Inspectors in my area do not like, nor agree with this ruling from State Authority. But their hands have been tied in matter.

But as in desribed, discription above: manufactured decorative multi-bulb wall-hung vanity fixtures are not listed for Damp/Wet locations. And even though it is a "luminaire", State doesn't feel it fits one of the outlined discriptions,as in the "discribed luminaire fixtures" in 410.4(d)..

I was suprised when learning of this ruling.Just wondering,if others AHJ's in your areas have ruled as in same?

Re: Lights; Bathtubs

I helped a friend wire a house for a builder (the builder's own home)

his wife got this freakin... antique brass,
hanging light chandelier looking thing to hang above the BATHTUB on a 3 or 4 foot chain... this thing was at least as big around as the inside walls of the tub... it had like 5 lamps inside it.

when you are SITTING in the tub, you could reach up and hang your WASHRAG from this freakin light

if it was in MY house, I would prolly be putting my BEER on it while i took a bath..

the builder installed this light himself and I said nothing.. but it was RIDICULOUS

There is a designer that the GC that I do alot of work for and she is telling the GC that people are putting chandeliers near the tub; I told the GC that as long as it is outside the 3' window that is fine, but inside the 3' window I won't be installing it; The GC's reply is "If you don't give the people what they want we will be collecting unemployment"

In many areas doing something that puts life or property at grave risk can be grounds for severe disciplinary action and could cause you or your company to loose it's licenses. If an injury or death were to occur then you could be criminally held accountable. Something to think about before you do something that is against code. There has been a few cases of electricians going to prison!
