Surface mounted incandescent - 12" between fixture and storage space. Wall or ceiling mount. Surface mounted fluorescent - 6" between fixture and storage space. Wall or ceiling mount. Recessed both - 6" between fixture and storage space. All of these are required to have completely enclosed lamps.
