Have any of you ever installed lights on the tower and the jib of a tower crane and did you enjoy it. If I couldn't do electrical work this is what I would want to do. Any pictures of instalations of lights on tower cranes?

I actually put the lights on the two cranes in the photo where they are jumping the tower crane.

Most of that is pre-fab on the ground not much to it.

Yes, we prefab as much as we possibly could so that we wouldn't take a chance on droping something and It would be less that we would have to do several hundred feet in the air.

Prefab on the ground, a little work up high. I have also climbed a 330 foot jump crane (starting from the 10th level.) Twice to replace the burned out aircraft lights, once to repair the swing brake.

All I can say is those things move around a lot.

No one else on the job would do it! Former rock climber, so I think that helped.

Last time I installed lights on a tower crane it was when the jib was on the ground. 480 volt 1000watt discharge lighting fixtures. We installed three on one circuit and two on another circuit. Lots of SO cord was involved

Yep. However, the GC doesn't always give you a call to get the work done while it's still on the ground.

I just climbed one this past summer that was 490ft high. Spectacular view right above Pike Place in Seattle. I was driving down below and my buddy, who operates it, told me to park the van and come on up. My legs and arms weren't happy with me for the next two days.

Yes they do. I love being up there. I would love the oppertunity to operate a tower crane have any of you operated one? When I was up putting the lights on the crane the operator let me sit in the seat and move it around a little.

Yes there is always a good view from up. I'm glad the GC nevered called as the crane was on the ground because I would have missed out on climbing the crane. At the present time we have about 25 cranes down town building high rise buildings.

And the operators can tell you all the 'good' windows to look into and they share information. I'll leave it at that.

As for operating one, my friend was going to let me because it was a slow day, but I had to go and do some electrical work.

I'll be the first to accept any job on a crane in our service department.

I had to install a strobe on one many years ago, the crane was near a hospital and a Life Flight helicopter and the crane operator met eyeball to eyeball one night. They would not shut it down for me to install it, so I had to wire in a small step down transformer, and run a cable from the motor end up to the crows nest and mount the strobe while it was still operating. The worst part was trying to mount the transformer while out on the tail end, fair amount of G force slinging you around.

I put lights on the jib of a crane on a sunday morning and they said that the schedule wouldn't let them shut the crane down so out on the jib we go being tied off to the cable that is doing the lifting and that is a wierd filling being tied of to something that is always moving.

If that doesn't work, I'll download one onto my server and host it.

Added: Dang! It disappeared again!
