Line Loss Calculation

Can anyone provide a formula for calcualting line loss on both household current (120V - 240V)and low voltage (12V) systems. Known factors would be the Length of wire run, voltage, amp draw, and wire gage and type. I simply need to know when to step up to the next larger gage, given the outcome of such a calculation.

VD=(25.8 * I * L)/CM

Where:

VD = Voltage Drop
I = Load Current
L = One Way Wire Length
CM = Circular Mills Of Cable
