I have a sentence in my curriculum that states, " In applications requiring the liquidtight conduit to move, the NEC limits the length to 3 feet or less" This was challenged by one of the students who claimed that the code has changed to "6 feet".

Section 350 talks about flexibility but I am looking for some clarity on this issue.

If not securely fastened

If not securely fastened

Length not exceeding 3' where unfastened for flexibilty. Otherwise it must be fastened within 12" of each box, conduit body etc... and every 4.5' minimum after.

350.30(A) Exception No 2, to the 2005 NEC limits the length of unsecured LFMC to lengths not to exceed 3' at terminals where flexibility is necessary.

Exceptions 3 and 4 to this section allow lengths of up to 6 feet for luminares and equipment in accessible ceilings.

The 2008 NEC has added some changes to section 350.30(A) Exception No 2. Here is what the new section says:

Exception No. 2: Where flexibility is necessary after installation, lengths shall not exceed the following:
(1) 900 mm (3 ft) for metric designators 16 through 35 (trade sizes ? through 1?)
(2) 1200 mm (4 ft) for metric designators 41 through 53 (trade sizes 1? through 2)
(3) 1500 mm (5 ft) for metric designators 63 (trade size 2?) and larger

So there is now added lengths for larger diameter LFMC.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Chris
