running into a dimmer issue. using incadecent bulbs on fixtures and some 6"can lights.
the problem i'm having is these dimmers are generating heat and can be felt on the installation screws and the faceplate screws.
i see (now) that they have to be down sized (basically) with additional dimmers in same gang box.
so how can i correct this heat issue? do they make a larger wattage dimmer? i'm using some with 800w and some with 600w...(if i remember correctly)
thanks!

The metal on a dimmer is the heat sink, it dissapaits heat. When you break away the metal tabs, you are derating, and you lower the wattage rating as the heat sink has less surface area. Dimmers get warm, and the cover plate screws get very hot.

Get a screwless cover plate, Lutron came out with these specifically for this purpose, and now most lighting control/device manufacturers have them.

ETA: I didn't know lithonia made dimmers (apparently they do, maybe a rebranded Lutron), so I searched for lumea, and this is a Lutron product. It is rated for either 600w or1000w, so your 800w load should be on a 1000w dimmer anyway. It will still get hot.

YOU are absolutely correct on the namebrand....its been a long week already.
All that you said makes sense. I'll look at the screwless covers. And make sure I have the larger wattage switches in the proper place. Thanks for the help!
