Load Calculations For Emergency Sprinkler System

I am trying to do a load calculation for a building, and I was wondering if I can discount to load of the 5hp water pump in the emergency fire alarm system. Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand the question. What do you mean "discount"? What are you trying to achieve?

By discounting I mean, taking a percentage of the full load for the pump. The pump hopefully never runs, so why would you take 100% of the pumps load into account when calculating the load of the building.

you are worried about a 5Hp pump?

Yes, this 5 hp pump makes or breaks my 400 amp service, and ths is the largest size service I can get in the area the building is being constructed.

normally the ventilation system shuts off when the fire alarm trips. since they can't be on at the same time, maybe you can use the non-simultaneous load idea.

If I were the building owner, I would be real nervous about having a building that close to the maximum juice I can pull. There are few buildings that ever use less power over time, almost all end up using more.

Is their anything about the ventilation system shutting off when the fire alarm turns on in the NEC?

I think if i am right the NEC is kinda quiet on this issuse here but the NFPA will have it on the listing kinda like more building code but i am not sure if that will be in NFPA or IBC or other i will let other speak up with this item .

Merci , Marc
