I have a question regarding a Load Side PV feeder Tap. Not a Line Side tap to be clear. And this is not a breaker connection.

Situation is a customer has a meter/main combo and there isn’t space to tap what would be considered the line side(ahead of the main breaker) before the 200A main breaker. From that main breaker the feeders run into a 225A main lug load center inside the house not really accessible and no room for backfed breaker.

Installing 31 enphase IQ7PLUS micro inverters. Which comes out to roughly 47A with the safety adder. (1.5a x 31 micros )

Is it ok to tap the load side of the feeders( after the 200A main) ? What needs to be taken into consideration? There’s just not much I could find online regarding this situation and I do understand speaking with the local AHJ is best course. But he’s a hard man to pin down and I’m curious what the general consensus is.

The main thing is you need overcurrenct protection arranged to prevent the combined 200A utility and 37A solar from overloading the feeder and panel down stream of your tap. If you can't add a main breaker to the 225A panel then your going to have to downsize the main 200A breaker or find another way.

See 705.12(B)(1) 2020 NEC.

Here's a couple other threads on load side taps, for what they're worth
