Every project has water heaters either 3 phase or single phase. I have always specified a three pole disconnect switch for three phase water heater and a machine rated switch for single phase water heater for maintenance purpose. I have just checked NEC handbook. I didn't see any thing about the local disconnecting means. Are those disconnect switches or switches I specified before are not necessary? How do you approach this simple design? Thanks.
