I was recently dinged on my inspection because I did not have a locking ring device on the breaker for the range because it was going to hardwired. This ring slips on the breaker so that it does not trip and I guess while your servicing the range you can use it as a lockoff device.

Inspector told me that I will need these on all equipment including heating equipment.

Does anyone have a picture and a code reference for this device. I seem to be confusing the suppliers as they want to sell me a lock out tag out device.

This is for GE "fat breakers"

Why would anyone require a device on a breaker that will prevent it from tripping?
Because they are clueless as to what they are asking for.

It is not possible to have a UL489 listed breaker that does not trip. By design these breakers must be 'trip free' regardless what is done to their operating handle in the field.

Because pennies don't work anymore!

thats gotta be it. thanks. the part i got sold was a small clip that slipped over the handle.

have you used these? can you shut the door with it on?

Why didn't the inspector give you a code reference for what is in violation?

If he had done that he should have given you 422.31(B) (for the range anyhow).

(B) Appliances Rated over 300 Volt-Amperes. For permanently connected appliances rated over 300 volt-amperes, the branch-circuit switch or circuit breaker shall be permitted to serve as the disconnecting means where the switch or circuit breaker is within sight from the appliance or is capable of being locked in the open position. The provision for locking or adding a lock to the disconnecting means shall be installed on or at the switch or circuit breaker used as the disconnecting means and shall remain in place with or without the lock installed.

Pay particular attention to the last sentence in that section - the device you got does not comply, the one Bob gave a link for does. Does not mean the device you got is worthless - but is worthless for this particular application.
