I had never seen an exit sign mounted low like this before this week.

We have one assisted living facility nearby that has two EXIT signs at each exit. One high & one low. The low one would be useful

in low visibiltiy situations think smoke.

I wish people would post pictures where I could actually see what they are talking about. I see the sign apparently hanging off something. Is it a dead mouse?

They are mounted low, mostly in hotels and similar occupancy's due to low ceilings, smoke quickly will cover a ceiling mounted exit sign, so they mount low ones too to assist finding the exit while you are crawling on the floor.

Put some in like that in a couple of motels in my town. Such an arrangement is required by their insurance.

It looks like a 4/0 box that is notched at the KO's to rest on an X in the grid.

Now that you say it, it does look like an octagon box, pretty corroded for some reason though.

Your right, it looks like it was notched with a blow-torch, hence the dead-mouse appearance.
