Like a few have mentioned, the worst thing about these is fire.

My understanding is that the wood will hold up much longer than these plates.

When the plates get hot enough they will warp and pull right out of the wood (not to mention they'll get weak).

That's just my understanding. I have not personally seen it.

That is correct.

Steel beams fail faster in a fire than wood beams do.

The Simpson Strong-Tie hammer-on plates from the DIY stores are specifically called "MP-xx mending plates - not for trusses".

I don't think you can ever get the uniform attachment of the plate to the wood member using a hammer. The hydraulic rollers assure the correct and uniform installation.

Stop worrying about fires,if it got that hot the sap starts running out and they will be getting replaced anyways.I have rewired several fire jobs and trusses held up fine except for the ones that were totalled anyways.Fire chiefs do visit after the fire and have major say on what is salvage or not.

Fire chief has nothing to say about the replacment..we had to have an engineer come out and asses the damage and write a letter we could give to the insurance company..they were going to only replace 12 of the rafters but we were able to whole new roof the rafters we damaged and would not support the required snow load..so after first hand dealing with a fire in the rafters I can safely say insurance companies have the real say..

I have been seeing those for a long time. In 1990-91 I was working as a carpenter and the wrong trusses were ordered and could not be returned. I was given the job of scraping the wrong ones. I tried to pry those plates of with large pry bars .... can not be done. They are glued as well as pressed.
Please tell me you cant pry a little glued plate off a couple of two by fours with a demo bar!!

They kicked my butt.

I could have eventually got them off but not without chewing up the lumber.

I just grabbed the skill saw and cut the lumber close to the plates.
