Hello forum,
I have been a licensed electrician for 11 years and have a small commercial job starting in a few days. My father is also a master electrician and was supposed to complete this job with my small company, however, he has suffered from a stroke on March 4th and is currently unresponsive. He was going to be providing guidance for any questions I had, which are very few, so I am turning to his go to source for information... You Guys!

For the past 10 years, my company has primarily handled residential wiring and light commercial repairs.

My question is...

On the prints, there is a single wall 30' long with a receptacle and data jack to be placed every 3'. My only issue is not knowing if I should be looking for dual voltage boxes for the 10 recep/data outlets or can I just install a standard 4" square box for power and a separate box for the data jacks? I am just unsure on how to mount the data box to get them beside of the outlets. Can i just feed the cat5 wire into space between the 2 studs and use a cut in box with "F" clips to attach the box to the dry wall?

I know its a stupid question, but I am lost without my dads advice.

You can cut in a box but if the wall is a fire wall then the box cannot be in the same stud space as any outlets behind it. I also think there is a building code that restricts the size of the box opening in one space.

I not sure how you are going to do a 4"sq. box in the space but it would need a divider. They may make something but I am not familiar with it. I would probably install 2 boxes

The plugs i usually use a 4 sq with a plaster ring on one side of the stud.If the wall is finished then a cut in.
The data IMO your best move is to check what the specs say and or talk to the person doing the data. Most common here is just drop a string line down the wall and use a mp 1 ,, I believe thats the name,, it thin metal the size of a 1g and after you cut the hole in the wall it fits in the hole like a mud ring does but from the outside of the wall and has 2 strips that fold in so you can screw the outside through the sheetrock into the strip to keep it in place. If you need a conduit i a 1" is what is specified on the ones ive done.. Flex also works. The big orange store has orange boxes like the ones posted her that have a place on top and bottom with multiple sized ko s from 1/2 up to 1 1/4,,,if you need a conduit.. Every job is diff, the data guys i have worked with dont care what you provide as long as they get a string to pull it down and many cut the holes if they get to them before me.. This would be based on just regular walls..
Prayers be with your dad,,,

Existing wall, new wall?

Wall detail, such as stud type, wallboard type, surface treatments, etc.? Picture of wall detail from prints easiest.

Any spec's on outlet height, cabling or conduit, etc. for either power or data?

Ceiling type?

Fire-rated wall or not?

The more detail you provide the quicker you'll get a solid plan.
