Re: LOOKING FOR NEC CODE

Open wiring is allowed for overhead branch circuits and feeders.
You are not specific enough on your question. What type of occupancy and what application?

300.3 Conductors.
(A) Single Conductors. Single conductors specified in Table 310.13 shall only be installed where part of a recognized wiring method of Chapter 3. (quoted from 2002 NEC)

Thats it in a nutshell :D

Re: LOOKING FOR NEC CODE

SITUATION:
ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS HAD #2THHN RUNNING THRU HIS ATTIC AND DOWN THE WALL INTO HIS PANEL. THE WIRE WAS NOT ACCESSABLE OR EXPOSED TO PHYSICAL DAMAGE.
APPARENTLY THIS WAS NOT SEEN BY THE INSPECTOR OR IT WAS LEGAL. I CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE IN THE CODE BOOK THAT STATES THHN MUST BE RUN IN CONDUIT, EVEN WHERE NOT EXPOSED. WE COULD NOT WORK ON THE CUSTOMERS PANEL DUE TO THIS, BUT COULD NOT TELL HIM WHY THIS WAS NOT LEGAL. EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW IT IS NOT LEGAL. BUT WE COULDN'T SHOW HIM IN WRITING. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR REPLY.

OOPS !!

The last post sounded like the question was not answered, but I now see that Pierre already had it. That's your answer.

Re: LOOKING FOR NEC CODE

Article 398 covers "Open Wiring on Insulators", but it is allowed only for agricultural building or industrial establishments.
Article 394 covers "Knob and Tube" wiring, but it is allowed only as extensions of existing systems, or by special permission. Since special permission has to be in writing, ask to BO if he has granted special permission at this house, or tear it out.

Re: LOOKING FOR NEC CODE

Re-reading the thread, I get the idea these are the service conductors. 230.43 lists the allowed wiring methods for service entrance conductors. Knob and tube is not on the list. Open wiring on insulators is at the top of the list, but again it is only allowed in agriculture or industrial applications.
