Sounds like you need a 3p contactor controlled by a simple X-10 transmittter/receiver, with the limits wired as needed.

More info = more details.

i was looking for something a little more heavy duty than x-10 controls; and by that i mean the actual handheld transmitter. i've used dual contactors w/ cheap plastic remotes on boat lifts for homeowners, but since this is in a warehouse, i was thinking something with a heavy duty casing because it will most likely get dropped and banged around. i just realized i didn't specify that in the original post.

its a 4.5hp motor on a freight elevator. currently its controlled at each level by a start/stop station. the customer wants a handheld remote.

We did something like this a while back. I can't remember the brand and the transmitter looked like a garage door remote. It fired a relay which fired a coil, etc etc

I wonder if Liftmaster makes something you could use? Distance may be a factor though?

distance won't be a factor; i've used something similar with those 'credit-card' remotes; the only thing i am concerned with is the environment the transmitter will be in. i don't want to sell them a flimsy remote that could break easily.

If you cant find an off-the-shelf solution, get a decent remote control relay system with a flimsy remote, and then gut the remote and put it in a solid box with a standard industrial pushbutton on it. Or get a standard (what the rock and roll guys call a) pickle and modify it to have the radio remote in it.

The remotes from Carl's Electronics look good to me, I've got them bookmarked for next time I need one of these things...

Since you need reversing and limits I recommend you use an off-the-shelf motor starter, as it has all the gubbins to make that work reliably. Choose one that allows connection of external buttons easily. With remote buttons the control supply is 120V so a standard ickle relay is good for that voltage. Just connect to the relay contacts of the radio receiver.

If you just want one button for go, then I'd probably reach for a micro-PLC to manage the conversion from single relay to multiple buttons.
