Looking to get a website

I did a search to see what others have said about starting a website to help with business. I didn't find much.

I'm just a one man shop so I don't want to spend much. I also don't think I need a lot of content. Any suggestions on where to start?

I know I need to figure out a domain name and if it is already taken. I think I need a host for the site. Would a site like godaddy.com be able to do both? Is that a good site? Someone said so but I haven't been there yet. Figured I start by asking here first.

I'm wondering if there are places that have a canned content where I can fill in the blanks for my business. It would be good if I could revise or improve the content as I think of what to add or change.

It would be good if I Googled my town and "electrician" and my company was one of the sites to appear. I also plan to list the site in any print adds and on the side of my van. I don't think any of this will make a huge difference but every little bit helps if it doesn't cost a lot.

Thanks in advance, Mike

We use godaddy.

Gives you a domain name so that you can have a xyz at domainname dot com for email.

I have the rotten position of maintaining our web site. We went the cheap route with gd and it was pretty easy to set up from a canned site boilerplate and pages. Pretty cheap as well.

That sounds like what I am after.

I was thinking of leaving my e-mail as my usual like johnsmith@comcast.net Anybody see any drawback to that? Everybody I already know uses my comcast e-mail.

What is there to, as you say, maintaining a website?

You can setup an email adress with your new domain name and redirect the messages to your existing email. That way you can keep your existing email but still have an email address associated with your domain name. My personal opinion is it looks more legit to have an email address associated with the domain. I use GoDaddy and like it because it is economical and easy to use. I had some domains with Register.com and had a not so good experience. Register.com is also more expensive.

I like that idea. Would someone at godaddy be able to tell me how to redirect e-mail?

I'd go start creating a web page from some free templet's and get your layout ready.

The business side is just that, U buy, they sell any part of the service that you'll need and you got a website.

Enjoy!

And somewhere a web designer is posting on a forum, "I need new lights in my office, anyone think I can do this myself, I really need to save some money...electricians charge too much and are way over paid." We bitch and moan about being professional and other people doing our work {hacks}, but when it is time for us to hire a professional we too think we can "DIY." Hey, I'm no angel, and I like to save money, but since this is the bus. & marketing section, I'm going to give you some business advice; hire a professional and let them do their job. do, however, educate yourself on how to speak their language so that you can convey your wants and needs efficiently.

Go Daddy is one of the cheaper services out there, but as with electrical services, the price you pay and the value you receive are two different things. You can build a website yourself, but it will look like it. Sure you and I will be proud of it, as we should, but what will the sites intended audience think?

As a business decision, it is probably a far better use of your time developing the other marketing that drives your TARGET visitors to your website. I feel that a website is simply a marketing hub, you want your target visitor to be driven there by your marketing mix, and from there they should be able to access the information to further communicate with you/get what they are seeking.

PS: Just so its clear, I am living in a glass house, and throwing stones, because even though these our my beliefs, my website is not yet live; but it will be when the design team is completed in the near future.

dont, ever, ever, ever use an ISP email address as the one for your business. What if you move, comcast merges, gets bought out, swaps systems with timewarner, etc (this happens all the time with cable cos) use yourname@yourdomain.com for your email address so you are guaranteed your email address will never change as long as you keep the domain. You can forward your comcast email to it.

You may be right that having a pro do my website will produce better results but I want to start by DIY. I think I'll learn something. I might learn that I can do a good job of it, and I might learn that I wasted my time. I might learn how to better convey to a pro whai I want. Either way, my house will not burn down from my DIY attempts.

That's sounds like good advice. I already suffered through my e-mail being changed when my cable company sold to comcast

i forgot to add, that it looks much more professional. For example I have a couple different websites for different activities and I have an email of me@domain.com for each of them.

You can do it yourself via your godaddy account if you decide to go that route. It's fairly straight forward but I am sure they would help if needed. Good luck to you.

Look out they are hacks, they don't know what to do, they don't solve anything they won't sell you services, they've(anyone) hacked to their present position being stupid!

...

People go to work and provide a service and complete work everyday.

I'm truely missing what a hack has to do with a web site!

As like anything else it is what one will put into it!

If ones goes first class, well there's not much to question?
Oh but a hack might have done it, Buyer beware!

Respect is earned not given... fine flip the statement to; use ones blinders of give not earned, but frankly I thought it was the former!

Professionals and par professionals respect what's need to be done daily.
Wait there's hack's or sliders or lazy or incompinent people there in their line of work too.... Ok lets see the web page!

Gezz why is everything bottom, “ out to being a hack... ?” Expecting to witness something, got some level of expectation that no one can clarify other than a HACK?, Would you know something outside your line of life of experience? Something that they didn't except need to clarify, but should have clarified, well I guess You fail you didn't read the directions! Wait they are a Hack, Good Luck with that. If you do shop around for the best one or maybe one won’t be a hack but one might know better to think long about anything or present something for a hack to deploy! Buyer beware, hack everywhere, no thanks...
