Pierre, It's all about grounding in "patient care" areas. The code requires metalic wiring methods as well as an equipment grounding conductor, thus providing a redundant grounding parh for all connected equipment in the patient care area, even cord and plug connected equipment. While not familiar with the bed you mentioned, I'm sure the indicator light would serve as a warning to attendants that this grounding path has been compromised and an unsafe condition would occur should the metal components of the connected equipment become energized. Hope all is well with your wife.
