The demolition work at on a building in the ground zero area of New York City, has cost the lives of two fireman, and injured two more fireman today, The site has been issued violations since the demolition work started. Recent news stories, bring to light the contractors lack of experience in the demolition of a project this size, they fired the contractor this week, the recent news reported, he was the low bidder on the project, safety experts claimed as low bidder, he may have excluded, or overlooked the cost of providing safety for the project.
As electrical contractors, do we include, the cost of providing a safe work place in our bids?

What, pray tell, are we supposed to do to the jobsite to make it safe (that costs money) that the GC doesn't already do?

Harnesses when going "aerial'
Confined Space Awarness
Temp light and power (change a lamp once in awhile for Pete's sake!)
Housekeeping
etc

The GC may be providing these in a manner of speaking (paying) but unless the EC has included these items in their bid ~ is it really gonna happen?

You never erect scaffold, you don't use lift equipment, you don't do any high voltage testing, your ladders are all in date, and all the personal protection equipment, has no cost impact.

Working overhead in occupied areas, is where we have most of our added cost.

Yeah, Work safety, always a postive note when you've been on the JOB
working like a dog and the super walks in to state, gezz we should have pulled you guys... this is a mess ...
