hello everybody, I have a doubt over a 100kVA - 480V transformer protection.

This transformer has a short circuit level of 7kA. I have been reading that this kind of transformers (low power transformers) are protected occasionally by fuses for high short circuits levels (around 70kA). I have already design this transformer to be protected by termomagnetic interruptors. Is it wrong?? Do they need to be protected only by fuses?? or is it the combination of both types of protections?

Does anybody know any reference that says something about this??

Thanks.

You need to provide a few more details.

Are you asking about protecting the primary or the secondary of the transformer?

What is the primary voltage, what is the secondary voltage?

Is this a liquid filled or air cooled transformer?

Is your application subject to the NEC?

No, using a thermal-magnetic breaker is not wrong.

Some people like fuses only.
Some people think that all transformers should be protected the way the power companies do it - only to remove a faulted and burning transformer from their power grid.
Some people have no idea what they are doing, and simply copy someone else's design.
Finally, there are local practices, standards, and codes that should be followed.
