low voltage burglar and fire certification

Is the NEC Fire Alarm Class/Certification required for installation of residenital smoke detectors as part of a residential burglar alarm system, since they are not powered by a fire alarm system as defined in NFPA 72. We are trying to find out what certification we need to do ONLY residential burglar alarms with smoke detectors in NC.

I don't think the fire certification is required for standalone smoke detectors. I think what you eluded to is correct; if it's a fire larm system, then yes, you do need the fire/life safety cert.
