Low voltage cabling in wet location

I have always used direct burial cable or enclosed my cabling in conduit when running in a "wet location" (rooftop). I recently inspected an install at the request of the owner and noticed that the installer had run RG59 18/2 CM rated attached to 2" gas pipes without conduit. I find it hard to believe that this would be allowed. I can't find anything in the NEC2005 regarding video and low voltage in wet locations. I've ordered the 2008 edition, but haven't received it yet.

Any ideas

Thanks

I am not aware of any NEC restrictions on low-voltage wet
locations either.

The CM cable I have seen says it has a PVC jacket. I am
not a plastics/materials expert, but if PVC conduit is allowed
outdoors, it would seem that the PVC jacket would be
getting the same type of UV etc. exposure.

I don't think so. NM is not allowed outside...

They make wet location telephone and cable wires so there may not be a code against it but it would make sense to use the proper wire for the application.

820.24 cabling shall be supported by building structure

I don't think that gas pipes are part of the building structure

as far as the type of cable - if its communication cable, then the NEC doesn't care what they run if it complies with the appropriate section (I am assuming 820 but it could be another article)

On the cable attached to gas piping issue, I find that sometimes you have to go around the block the other way. In other words, the gas piping installation code probably would have plenty to say on this issue. Combine the two paths for the full answer.

Of course, I'm in the position to have these codes available to me, which is not so common. Plus, you would need to drive the "bookmobile" around to carry all the code books!

I agree. I thought the OP was talking about cable
suitable for direct burial and aerial use, sorry I misinterpreted
the original question. Such cable is available, and I've
installed it myself in such situations.

Not sure if this helps you or not since it is not a code but an installation standard. I have used this when dealing with Telecommunications cabling run underground on commercial projects where the specifications list compliance with various standards.

BICSI?s Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual, Chapter 4, Section 1, page 4-5, under the heading ?Wet Locations? states, ??slab-on-grade construction where pathways are installed underground or in concrete slabs that are in direct contact with soil (e.g., sand, gravel, etc.) are considered to be ?wet locations?.?

Would you by any chance have the wording and information on the rule relating to strapping cables to gas pipes? I'm in Maryland.

Wick1144;
Sorry I haven't been back here in a couple of days. I will be in the office tomorrow and will look at what we use here for the gas piping code, should be NFPA 54, 1996 ed..
