I'm a low voltage cable installer. I am installing pvc cable from the communication room through pvc conduit to a floor box 100ft away in the same building. The G.C. is telling me by code it has to be undergrond rated [pe89] cable and the inspector will not pass it. Is this true of false. The site is in Sanford,FL. PLEASE HELP AND ADVISE ME TO WHAT I NEED TO INSTALL. THANKS.

If the conduit is under a slab on grade, this will be a wet location and wet location cable would be in order. Also, if this is part of a manufacturer certified and backed system, they will not accept it either.

LOW VOLTAGE CAT 6 CABLING.

LOW VOLTAGE CAT 6 CABLING.

Thanks for the quick reply. I installed about 50 pvc cables to the floor boxs with in the same building and yes the conduit is under the slab on grade. Will the inspector make me pull it all out and replace it. Also it is not a backed system. Thanks again for all your help.

Those conduits will fill with condensation pretty quickly and the cable will be under water. Be aware that dry location data cabling in an enviroment like this may affect the data transmission (this is one reason why a manufacturer warranted and certified sytem will not allow this) and it will eventually fail completely.
I'd have to look it up to comment on whether it is a code violation. Maybe somebody else will chime in on that.

wet location, piping system, wiring and cabling methods must comply and be rated for wet conditions 300.5 nec, see also table 800.154 (a), also look at 800.47, thats sort of confusing, but thats the nec

I reckon that I did not do things right (by the book). :ashamed: Back in '83 I had a house built & ran underground feeders to it. The phone company brought their line to the power pole & from there, I ran 2 runs of the old 2 pair phone wire in conduit under ground (in same ditch as electrical), under the slab to a distribution point. When I left the house in '95, it was still working. :D

I've heard this before, and here in WA they look for that at least on thermostat cables that run outside. But I don't see the requirement.

What in 800.154 or 800.47 says you must follow 300.5 (section 90.3 says chapter 8 is not affected by chapters 1-7 except where specifically referenced in chapter 8).

Even power limited class1/2/3 circuits are exempt from chapters 1-4 unless specifically referenced (NEC 725.3).
