Hello everyone,
I just wanted to know if there is anyway around the 10ft minimum requirement for low voltage landscape lights near a pool. I do not see any in 680, but did not know if I might be missing something. Such as a pool and spa rated transformer? The lights would operate at 12 volts. This city requires submittal of plans for any outdoor lighting before a permit can be submitted, so thought I would run it by you first.

Thanks
Jacob

BTW: we are on the 2008 here

Jacob S,

I would not sleep well at night knowing I installed landscape lights closer

than the 10' NEC minimum. Around a pool area, these 12 volt lights could

kill someone under the right circumstances.

This is an old article but I think you can install LV lights closer than 10'

As noted in Fig. 2, GFCI devices as presently listed won't operate on a circuit with two ungrounded conductors. Therefore, these lighting systems are excluded between the 5-ft to the 10-ft radius around a pool unless the fixtures are rigidly attached to a structure at a point at least 5 ft above the maximum water level. They cannot be run at all, even on an existing structure, closer than 5 ft from the pool.

Nevertheless, we do see these lights used closer to swimming pools. These lights aren't installed under the provisions of Art. 411. This type of lighting operates on Class 2 power-limited circuits evaluated for wet-contact applications. Therefore, you install this type of lighting using listed Class 2 power supplies that typically don't exceed 75VA.

M.D.,

The OP is refering to landscape lighting, it is the next paragraph after the

low voltage that was refered to in the link you provided.

I'm confused by this issue and I'm not entierly sure that it is clear that his lights are not allowed at not less than 5'
