Does the NEC specify any distance that low voltage lighting must be from the leading edge of an inground swimming pool. The lights would be Malibu type landscaping lights.GFI protected.

Yes ten feet. See article 411. the gfci only protects the primary side of the transformer, so the lights have to be kept 10 feet from the pool. If the lights are UL listed this information will be part of the instructions. Just because its low voltage does not mean it is safe from shock. remember ohms law...in respect to resistance.

Article 680.22(B)(4)
More that 10 feet horizontally from the inside walls of the pool.
Your Low Voltage landscape lights are Not protected by the GFCI. Only the supply side of the transformer would have GFCI protection.
If you must be closer than 10', but no closer than 5', use 120v. lights protected by GFCI.

Re: low voltage lighting near inground pool

Hello Luke,

Does the grounded metal barrier between the primary and the secondary of the transformers for 680.23(A)(2) allow for the GFCI protection to be on the secondary side? Is that why these lights are allowed in the pool?

????

Re: low voltage lighting near inground pool

Hello Luke

My question is, could the pool type transformer be used to provide power to low voltage lighting in the 5 foot and greater area from the pool?

Thanks

Pierre
