we have low voltage lighting installed within a board room that is noisy. The lights are powered by a remote transformer located outside of the room and also controlled by a dimming system. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: low voltage lighting noise

Does the power supply have a choke incorporated into it? If not, the manufacturer should be able to provide you with the correct power supply for the dimming operation. This might consist of a choke and toroidal transformer/s.

You may also have the wrong type of dimmer. In general, electronic ballasts require special dimmers.

Re: low voltage lighting noise

Some lamps make noise at the lower levels due to the vibration of the filament caused by the dimmer turning the voltage off and on.

thanks for your responses, the transformers do have chokes installed and what Don wrote is exactly what was being explained to the client. However after I did some more digging and phone calls, the dimming system has not been calibrated yet and after that the noise should be gone. will let you know what happens.

Re: low voltage lighting noise

After further meeting with lighting reps, it was determined that the 75W AR-111 low voltage lamps were making the noise due to be dimmed. The filament of a 75W lamp vibrates which is the noise, the lamps were replaced to 100W AR-111 and a lens was installed on the fixture and the noise was gone. Also, when leaving the 75W lamp in and just switching the fixtures on/off there was no noise. I guess we call this a lesson learned.
