Low voltage outdoor lighting requirements

I am going to end up asking the local code official anyone but to be more informed before I need to ask questions: low-voltage outside for landscaping lighting if the driver brings a voltage to 12 Volts does the low-voltage wire have to be buried to normal recommended depths of 24 inches which is ridiculous for low-voltage wiring and also what about running in PVC conduit I would like to bury the wire unprotected (no conduit) at a depth of about 6 inches because it poses no potential harm at the very least or run it in PVC conduit at 4-6" inches in pvc to protect the wire against possible damage from other people after me working in the area underground (home owner or gardners) but I can find no clear indication within NEC code and I'm working off the 2008 book; that specifies for outdoor lighting with step down voltage and it's requirements for running the wire And also do the joints even need to be secured in a box. I read through the instructions of a kit for a 12volt per lighting unit build up kit and it gave no absolute instruction for junctions Or joints or depth of the wiring. Will definitely bring this up with building codes on Monday but would like a informed answer from outside parties before hand
Thank you for any help yo can offer.

See column 5 of 300.5; 6". Also, many mfg of 12V landscaping lighting list burial depth 4-6", so 110.3(B) comes into play. 6" will be fine, barring local amendments.

eta: every kit I have ever installed has junctions rated for DB. No box, shrink wrap, nothing.
