Low Voltage required to be in a Junction box outside?

My inspector told me that I have to put my 24 volt irrigation valve splice in a junction box outside. Is that required??? I just have a wire nut for the splice. Just thought it would be the same for door bell splices.

There is no NEC requirement that class 2 or 3 circuits be spliced in a box. It is a good idea if you ever want to have access to the splices later.

Simple wirenuts are not listed for use in a wet location or for direct bury so you do need to use a splice listed for the location.

Why was that inspector even looking at the sprinkler box?

Township building inspectors are trying to keep their jobs right now and they are getting VERY annoying! Can you just let the electrical inspector do his job!

You should be using direct burial wire nuts that are packed with grease. But other than that I see no reason for a box. Hopefully the valve and it's splice is in a irrigation box. That's not what he is talking about is it?

he should be happy you have wire nuts. My irrigaton wiring consists of a cat5 cable coming out from under the house, spliced to another cat5 cable that goes in a conduit over to the valve box. The splice = wires twisted together and taped.

Guess you never know when someone may want to use that wiring for a computer out there.
